FAQ for Undergraduate Candidates

The University-wide ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 1 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center. 



When and how do I get an official invitation?

Official invitations will have been sent to the candidate's Pitt email address as of March 9. Please be sure to check your spam and junk folders as well. Questions may be directed to the Office of Special Events.

Are tickets required for the ceremony?

At this time, tickets are not required for entrance to the Petersen Events Center. Open seating is available. 

Does everyone wear regalia?

Only students in full academic regalia (cap, gown, and hood) will be permitted to participate. The only exception will be for those graduates in military uniform.


How do I purchase my regalia?

Regalia will be available for purchase IN-STORE at the University Store on Fifth beginning April 12 at Graduation Central through May 1.

Graduation Central: what is it?

Graduation Central will be held on April 12 and 13 from 10:00am - 6:00pm at the University Store on Fifth. This is a one-stop hub for all things graduation! Pick up your regalia - shop for class rings, diploma frames, etc. - speak with Commencement representatives about the ceremonies - and enjoy a festive environment filled with games, music and more! More details and website to come.

When and how will I get instructions on what happens on Commencement day?

After you complete the registraion link located inside your official invitaton, you will receive a confirmation email that your registration was submitted.  In the weeks to come, you will receive instructions via your Pitt email as well as have access to them on the Commencement website.

My family members are traveling internationally, how can I invite them?

Based on current policies, you will not need an invitation letter from our office.  There are, however, various steps you will need to take in order to invite your family to the US.  Please review the following link to instructions provided by Pitt’s Office of International Services.

What happens at the ceremony?

Do candidates cross the stage at the University-wide ceremony?

Yes! The Class of 2022 will have the opportunity to cross the stage and have their name announced at University-wide undergraduate ceremony.

Is there a photographer?

The University of Pittsburgh has partnered with GradImages to capture an image of each student as they cross the stage. Other shots may be offered, depending on the venue and mitigation policies.

Graduates will be sent electronic copies of their photo proofs to the email address used during registration. Picture orders will be placed through GradImages directly.

Should you have any questions about your photos, please contact GradImagesGuests are not permitted to approach the stage to take personal photos.

How long is the University-wide undergraduate ceremony?

The University-wide undergraduate ceremony lasts about 2-2.5 hours.

Can I go to both the University-wide ceremony and my school or department's event?
Yes! Undergraduate candidates from the Class of 2022 are welcome to attend both the University-wide ceremony as well as their school or college events. Be sure to read each event description as many are designated specifically for undergraduate candidates, graduate-level candidates, or both. Some schools, colleges or departments may only be hosting an event for certain audiences. Graduate and professional students are welcome to attend their school or college events.
 If I am not attending in person, how do I watch from home?

The University-wide commencement ceremony will be livestreamed here on the Commencement website AND on the Pitt Official YouTube Channel for students and guests who are unable to attend. 

Are COVID mitigation measures in place for Commencement?

Masks will be optional during the ceremony and COVID-19 vaccinations are not required for guests. For more details on the University’s COVID-19 response, please visit coronavirus.pitt.edu.
